My kids saw Julian for years. He was always a little quirky, a rather unusual personality, but I encouraged my kids to just roll with it. Spoke with him a couple of times about stuff that I didn't think was right, fillings for a 10 year old without freezing, hygienist humiliation techniques to improve dental hygiene but he was cheap and convenient so I put up with it, and my kids had no choice. Yeah, terrible mom award :( Fast forward and my now adult (19 y/o) daughter needed wisdom teeth pulled... I'm trying to find a way to say this without being too long winded but it's tough. He told her he needed her insurance info to check coverage, booked an appointment, said she'd be good with 3 days off, said he'd freeze her and possibly give her gas but would provide prescription painkillers and would do 2 teeth at a time. He did not check insurance and instead surprised her with a bill after the extraction for over $300 of which he said her insurance paid $67 , freezing - no gas, one tooth not two but a couple of stitches - no prescription pain meds. She left with some gauze and a prescription for a steroid and an antibiotic and $250 poorer. (we're working that out with insurance but if he had checked, like he said he was doing she could have been prepared or had it worked out with insurance in advance.) I was astounded to learn that there were no written aftercare instructions. So thanks to google and much unsolicited advice from non dentists, she used an ice pack, took the Tylenol and Advil, didn't drink through a straw and bit down on a piece of gauze for a few hours after the extraction. The pain was bad for her and she was quite swollen. I kept on her about taking the painkillers as directed but it didn't really seem to be helping and at the end of the third day, I advised her to get some Tylenol 1's. Today is day 5 and she was still having so much pain and was having trouble working because of it so I called today and asked them first, if she could stop in the office after work and have him take a quick look just to make sure everything was going ok and so she could talk to him about the pain she was in. I dropped her off after work and when I met her on my way to pick her up with tears streaming down her face and unable to catch her breath, I had to wait until she calmed down to find out what happened. She said both the dentist and then joined by the hygienist (who I always thought was very sweet) berated her for not paying attention when they told her what to do, reminded her that she had signed a form. When asked about the painkillers was told that she didn't really want to take narcotics did she? When asked about the pain bending over while working, well she shouldn't be doing that and eventually ended up telling her that this is all her, no one else has this kind of experience, they didn't need to put up with her asking questions or me asking questions. For some reason I thought that the medical 'professionals' would be ok with a few questions and had encouraged her to just be straightforward and ask and describe what she was experiencing. I think that this kind of behaviour is reprehensible from so called medical professionals. Especially a dentist to somehow blame the patient for having pain and expecting him to actually do the things he said he would do and that they would gang up on her and humiliate her. I would never recommend this guy to anyone again. Hopefully Ontario gets the universal dental care thing going so no one is even tempted to put up with sub standard dental care because they can't afford the good stuff.
